For the ninth consecutive season, Brembo will provide all the drivers of MotoGP, each with a personalized offer. New caliper in Moto2, new solutions in Moto3.
Brembo will provide personalized braking systems to 2024 drivers in 22 who will participate at 23nd MotoGP Championship, a category introduced in 2002 to replace the prestigious 500.
The 11 teams decided once again to trust in the high performance, reliability and safety guaranteed by Brembo parts. These include brake calipers, carbon discs, brake master cylinders, clutch transceivers and pads.
For the 2024 season, Brembo's wide range of technical solutions will allow each driver to customize the braking system to best suit their individual riding style, track and racing strategy.
The new MotoGP season will also see AP Racing supply three of the five manufacturers (18 riders out of a total of 22) with its latest carbon/carbon multi-plate clutch technology. AP Racing is part of the Brembo group.
Brembo braking systems in MotoGP: facts and technical details
All drivers on the grid will use the GP4, the MotoGP caliper already launched in 2020. This one-piece aluminum caliper is machined from one solid piece of aluminum and features a four-bolt radial mount. It is characterized by an amplification system that allows the braking torque to be increased: this means that the rider obtains greater benefit by applying the same pressure on the brake lever. Additionally, a spring-loaded device on the anti-friction system reduces residual torque and prevents pads and discs from coming into contact with each other, causing the motorcycle to slow down.
As for the discs, Brembo offers teams a wide range of carbon brake discs: five different diameters, each available in three material specifications (finned, high mass and standard) for a total of fifteen solutions.
Ventilated discs of 340 mm and 355 mm diameter will be increasingly used on circuits such as Spielberg, Buddh, Motegi, Buriram and Sepang. During the season, most riders should focus on the 340mm diameter discs, split between High Mass and Standard Mass.
The thickness of the discs, regardless of their diameter, is 8 mm, while the weight varies between 1 kg and 1,4 kg depending on the diameter and specification used.
In total, between the front wheel and the rear wheel, the MotoGP brake system weighs approximately 5,5 kg. The operating temperature of the carbon disc should be between 250° and 850°.
Brembo's participation in Moto2 and Moto3
After the tests carried out in Portimao and Jerez, Brembo confirms its presence as a leader in braking systems also in minor categories of MotoGP.
The Bergamo company will supply 100% of the calipers, around 30% of the steel discs, 80% of the Brembo pads, 90% of the Brembo master cylinders and just under 30% of the Marchesini wheels to the 15 Moto2 teams and 13 Moto3 teams which will participate in the competition in 2024.
As regards the discs, Moto2 and Moto3 teams will have a double choice depending on the rigor of the circuit: finned or standard steel disc, with an operating temperature which must remain between 100° and 650° in both categories.
Le Moto3 disc weighs approximately 0,5 kg, while the Moto2 disc weighs 1,3 kg, almost three times more than the disc in the small category.
As regards the calipers, Brembo also offers the winged caliper concept in Moto2 and Moto3, a concept derived from the GP4 caliper in MotoGP.
Overall, between the front and rear wheels, the Moto2's braking system weighs around 6kg, while the Moto3's is closer to 4,5kg.
Marchesini Wheels
For the 2024 season, 8 of the 11 teams use Marchesini forged magnesium wheels. Marchesini wheels have either 5 Y or 7 spokes for the front and rear. The wheels from Marchesini, part of the Brembo group, are lighter, which has advantages when accelerating, changing direction and, more critically, when entering a corner and applying the brakes, from cornering at high angles (up to 60°) to exiting a corner at full throttle, when the motorcycle is tilted.
